David Kearns, the former Chairman and CEO of the Xerox Corporation, points out that the closer we climb to the top the more we will be earning. He also observes that the longer we stay at the top, the more we must be learning. Not only is that true, it's powerfully useful information. Unfortunately, in our society today there are too many people who "finish" school but fail to complete their education which is never completed. I hasten to add that all great universities and educational institutions are not in buildings. Truly educated people learn from their parents, children and siblings. They learn by looking, listening and then thinking about how they can use that information to be a better person and a more effective performer.
Unfortunately, today there are many people who got out of school without getting much of an education, but figure that since they have a diploma or degree, they are "educated." Fortunately, we have many "doers" in life and in countless numbers they're going back for the completion of the education they never got while they were in school. In my travels I encounter men and women of all ages who tell me that on the second trip through they're doing much better academically than they did the first time around. The reason is simple: This time they go to school with a plan and a purpose. They go back with clear objectives in mind. They know they're going back on their own time and, in most cases, at their own expense. And this time, with a purpose in mind, they determine to invest their time and their dollars wisely.
