In his newsletter, Potential, Mr. Glenn Van Ekeren of Sheldon, Iowa, emphasizes that each one of us needs to understand that we are self-employed, and once we take ownership for our performance we become more effective. He states that although someone else might sign our paycheck, we fill in the amount and are responsible for our productivity. He points out that employment security is attained by maintaining a thirst for education, that "behaving like you're in business for yourself frees you to capitalize on possibilities and accept accountability for outcomes. This is a marvelous opportunity to shine in your position, develop an entrepreneurial reputation and make a significant difference with those who pay for your work." He also says, "Immersed in what they do, owners create a unique capacity to enjoy the adventures of work for extended periods of time."
Mr. Van Ekeren says, "You should transform your work from a bundle of tasks to visible results." He says that "we should befriend this new culture of freedom, flexibility and decision-making, but understanding that results and not busy-ness will determine your professional value." He points out that most workers today are "loyal and have achieved respectable longevity, but many have not recognized that they will be paid, promoted, recognized and esteemed for achieving results, not working hard." In a nutshell, he says that "focusing on results proves your worth to the organization. Without you, something very important would be missing."
Out of all of this comes two concepts which are significant in today's market place, namely, accepting responsibility for performing and then making the commitment to do exactly that. Unfortunately, too many people have only a casual interest in their performance. Mr. Van Ekeren points out that "most workers admit that they could double their effectiveness." It's my belief that if they did, they would multiply their job security a thousand-fold. Think about these observations, comments and challenges by Mr. Van Ekeren, take action on them and I will SEE YOU AT THE TOP!
