First Impressions

"It is not the brains that matter most, but that which guides them - the character, the heart, generous qualities, progressive ideas" - Dostoevski

Several years ago, I had a lengthy delay in the Pittsburgh airport so I headed for the shoe shine stand where two young men worked. One was a highly-motivated, personality-plus young man, the other was very quiet. I wanted the personable one to shine my shoes. However, when my turn came I got the quiet, almost sullen one.

I said, "Good morning! How are you?" The young man said nothing and I thought to myself, "That's no way to build a business!" As I sat down he carefully rolled up my pant leg and as he used the saddle soap to clean my shoes he was careful to get none on my socks. He wiped the shoes with extreme care and as he applied the polish, he made certain that every inch of leather was thoroughly covered. He brushed the shoes beautifully, then took his shine cloth and really put some energy into the job. As he was shining my shoes, I looked carefully at the young man for the first time. He obviously suffered from some degree of mental retardation. When he finished the job with a flourish, I don't need to tell you that the young man got a substantial tip from me.

Two major observations. His parents must be marvelous people to have taught this young man the importance of hard work and doing his very best. The second major observation is this: Regardless of your ability, if you develop it and use it to the fullest, you can become good - real good - at what you do. Major point: Be careful how you judge people on that first impression. Give them a chance. Take that approach to life and I will SEE YOU AT THE TOP!
