Show #431: Pay the price now to avoid the cost later

Classic Zig gives us a one-eighty in this compelling message about the prices we pay today to avoid the far greater costs tomorrow. He frames it in a sales training message, but as you’ll hear in the show, we bring this incredibly valuable message directly home to your life. Mine, too. Thanks to Performa Sleep and Kabbage for supporting this episode!

Welcome to episode 431 of the Ziglar Show. Today we’re listening to Zig teach us about the true cost of what we do and don’t do. We look at the price, the investment, but often don’t understand the true cost. As usual, this is a paradigm shifter that will free you to increase your personal performance…immediately

Hi, everyone. I’m the host of The Ziglar Show, Kevin Miller. Thank you for the recent five-star, glowing reviews on iTunes. Your encouragement means a lot to Tom Ziglar and me, and to our interviewees as well.

Speaking of that, we’ll have some tremendous guests on the show over the next few weeks. Our point is not to bring on “celebrities,” though most are, to some degree, but to bring on messages that are inspiring and practical for you to apply to your…true performance.

OK, let me quickly set up today’s message from Zig Ziglar. Zig is one of the most famous leaders in inspiration and motivation. But, professionally, he was a salesman. The reason you are here listening today is…he gave you great value and sold you on hearing his message. So his focus in the show is sales, and overcoming the price objection.

But, stop there…this message is necessary for everyone to understand and utilize because, as Zig famously stated and stood on, everyone is in sales. And the definition I use for sales is…influence. So if you want to influence yourself, your spouse or kids, your coworker, friend, manager, boss, employee…anyone, here is a primary topic you need to understand; we all do. Listen in to Zig. He gives about a 10-minute presentation, and then I want to give you some ideas to ponder in how this specifically pertains to daily activities you and I are engaged in, in our lives and work:

So, folks, I’m only going to give focus to one thing, so this will be brief, but it’s massively profound:

Price vs. Cost – difference

The price of excellence is discipline. The cost of mediocrity is disappointment. – William Arthur Ward

The price of inaction is far greater than the cost of making a mistake. - Meister Eckhart

Freedom has cost too much blood and agony to be relinquished at the cheap price of rhetoric. - Thomas Sowell

The price of light is less than the cost of darkness. - Arthur Nielsen

While some of you may have an actual sales position or run or own a business, and can use this message literally in your work, we can ALL use this message in regards to our personal development. Let’s talk about some examples.

Right now, I’m really working on addressing some core issues of my own person: I’ll list them:

My physiological health My psychological health My spiritual health My marital health My financial health

In each area it will require money, and, in what I’m looking at…thousands. As big a deal or more, it will require coordination, consistency, effort and time. The price is high.

But I’m 45 and I want more. I fear NOT paying the price, because if I don’t, the cost I’ll incur will be more than I would want to ever pay.

I’m 45 with 10 kids. The youngest is now four. If she gets married, has a baby, builds a house, at say…age 30, I’ll be 75. Out here in Colorado, I know guys actively building homes and bouncing up 14,000-foot mountains, but I also know many more who at that age are hardly capable of standing up out of a chair.

The cost of ill health and immobility, then, is too great a cost to me and my family and my legacy, and even my self-worth. So the price today, even if it’s tens of thousands of dollars, how can I not? Would they rather I pitter away and die at 75 and leave them ten grand more, or spend it to be vital and vibrant and a part of their lives until I’m 95?!

What is the cost if I don’t make sure my brain and mind is firing on all cylinders? I had dinner last night with a friend who is a top neurotherapist. His therapy is expensive. But if it makes my mind sharper, more capable of creativity and critical thinking, what is the value of that?

My marriage. Some areas of dramatic strength. Second to none. But some areas that are weak and just aren’t going to add up to full health. What will be the cost as time goes on if I don’t pay the price now?

You get the point.

What now are you, and I, needing, but questioning, balking at the price:

  • Money
  • Time
  • Effort
  • Vulnerability
  • Fear
  • Embarrassment
