I remember it like yesterday.
It was my first day on the phone as a salesperson at Ziglar - 27 years ago.
I had been trained. I was as ready as I could be. I was also a little scared. At 24 years of age, I was nervous about selling our products and services to people I didn't know.
Back then, in the "good ol' days" people would call us! No Internet, website, text, email, or social media. If people wanted something - they called!
My very first day, here is how my very first call went:
Ring. Ring. Ring.
"Good morning! It's a great day at Zig Ziglar's! This is Tom Ziglar. How can I help you?"
"Tom, so nice to meet you. I need some help."
"My kids are in trouble."
"Oh." I said, "What's going on?"
The 55-year-old-plus man started to tell me his story.
His daughter and son-in-law were in trouble.
Their marriage was in a rough spot.
He loved them both and wanted to help them any way he could.
His son-in-law was a young dentist and had just bought his own practice. School debt and the debt of the new practice was putting tremendous financial pressure on them.
Plus, they had three kids under the age of five.
They were doing everything they could, but their young marriage, three kids, a new business, and money challenges were really taking their toll.
"Tom, does your dad have any programs that could help them?"
Fresh out of training, I went into "catalog mode" and started telling him about each of our programs.
After about 30 seconds, the wise man, the father and grandfather, stopped me and said:
"Tom. Here is my American Express card. Go ahead and send them anything you think will help them. Let's pray."
Now you know why I remember my first sale at Ziglar!
The truth is, I had nothing to do with that sale. It was based on the trust and reputation that my father had built. The man knew that what Dad taught worked.
He just needed help picking the right programs.
I also remember like it was yesterday what happened after I hung up the phone.
My excitement after making my very first sale was suddenly replaced with a huge moral responsibility.
I had his credit card and I could send his kids EVERY product we had if I wanted to - that would be a really big sale!
Or
I could play it safe and send them the only one program that was the obviously most likely fit. This would be playing it "safe" and not giving them enough.
Instead, I had to really think about what were the perfect programs to send. So that is what I did. When someone prays with you for wisdom for his children so that they can improve their relationships with each other and their kids, you take it very seriously and pray about it.
