Danny Cox's book, Leadership When the Heat's On, has some exciting and very valuable tips on leadership. Here are just a few of them:
Number one, employees get better as their manager does and they really don't care how smart or talented you are. What people care about is your attitude towards them.
Second, leaders have contagious enthusiasm and, as Cox points out, if you don't have that enthusiasm, please understand that whatever you do have is also contagious.
Number three, when you make a list of things to do for the next day, as you finish the first one do not go to number two. Instead, understand that what was number two now becomes number one, and, psychologically, it becomes more important, when you give it a higher priority, to get that job done as well. Follow that procedure through numbers two, three, etc.
Danny Cox also lists the ten ingredients in his recipe for leadership: Number one, high ethics; two, high energy; three, hard work; four, enthusiasm; five, goal-oriented; six, courageous; seven, priority-driven; eight, non-conformist; nine, level-headed; and ten, committed to developing employees.
In an interview with George Foreman, Danny said he noticed George's nose and decided that here was a guy who understood pain so he asked him, "How did you stand all that pain to become the heavyweight champ?" Foreman answered, "If I see what I want real good in my mind, I don't notice any pain in getting it." Cox then points out that idea holds true for all of us.
Danny's given us some excellent advice. I believe if more of us will take it, we'll produce more leaders in this country. Listen to Danny Cox and I'll SEE YOU AT THE TOP!
