Zig On…Pet Therapy
By Zig Ziglar
Elizabeth loves Oscar. The fact that Elizabeth loves Oscar might not sound like headline material, but for me it is. Elizabeth is my special granddaughter. She was born with mental retardation and life holds many challenges for her. One particularly frustrating challenge has been an absolute terror of dogs. Just the barking of a dog could send her screaming. It got so bad that Elizabeth would not go on walks in the neighborhood because of dogs behind fences. She was becoming more and more uncomfortable in the world.
A real breakthrough came the day she saw and held Oscar, a little long-haired, miniature Daschund. Weighing in at under two pounds, Elizabeth saw no threat in this tiny pup. She was delighted and we were thrilled, so we gave Oscar to Elizabeth for her birthday. She’s had a ball with him ever since, but continued to fear large dogs. A few weeks later, our daughter, Cindy Oates, and her large golden retriever therapy dog, Emmitt, began working with Elizabeth in pet therapy. Cindy’s first goal was to get Elizabeth comfortable enough with Emmitt to touch him. This she accomplished in short order and Elizabeth is now comfortable around Emmitt and the majority of other dogs as well.
The quality of Elizabeth’s life has improved considerably because of these two dogs and she is not unique. All over the country, pets – and particularly dogs – are helping children, adults and the elderly through pet therapy. Pet therapy is one of the fastest growing fields in America and the demand for dogs and adults to work with them far exceeds the supply. Today the objective of visits of trained therapy dogs in various hospital settings is to help patients do things they haven’t been able to do because of an accident, an addiction, or a trauma of some kind.
It’s true that others can give you pleasure, but happiness comes when you do things for other people. If your time permits, get involved in a pet therapy program and I’ll definitely SEE YOU AT THE TOP!

Self-Employment Exposed
By Kevin Miller
America was built upon the pursuit of personal freedom and expression. We banded together and threw off the leashes, rules and confines of an old world. We forged our own paths, charted our own courses and sought our own destinies. Not alone mind you…but together in community, protecting each other’s backs.
Then the Industrial Revolution came upon us. Mass production was invented and along with it, an offer of employeedom where the work might be less rigorous, the pay increased and more consistent and the bonus of “benefits.” It took no time (just over 100 years!) for us to forget our past and become dependent again. Dependent on jobs and the economy and employers.
Today in 2010 we work far more hours and have less fulfilling work. We medicate our purposelessness by buying more than we need and further chaining us to the j-o-b, and regardless of how much we make we have no margin of time or money. The benefits of health insurance and retirement funds are rapidly growing extinct.
A growing number of people, however, have forsaken these new confines and sought freedom again. And claimed it! They are the self-employed. They work at what they want, when they want, how they want. The most successful have discovered their purpose and calling and a viable business within that…and would do what they do for free! That very reality, however, generally results in a drastically increased income, as they reap the rewards of authentically pouring their heart into their work. And as they live inspired lives, they inspire others.
But truth be told…for most people (possibly you?) the very thought of self-employment is equally as scary as it is enticing. As a society, we are no better equipped to pursue self-employment today than we are to harvest our food with a spear and a scythe.
So what is the solution, where do you turn? It’s not in the self-employment hype focused on easy work and lots of money, nor is it in the wave of work-at-home business scams. It’s not in the list of today’s “Best Self-Employment Opportunities” or a rundown of franchises. The answer is very personal and includes:
• Revelation of calling (Passions)
• Clarity of purpose (Dreams)
• Paradigm shift of beliefs (Faith)
• Knowledge of tools (Best Biz Practices)
• Nurturing of relationships (Social Networking)
• Invested community of peers (Support)
• Progression of self (Personal Development)
Sound like a lot? It is. It’s not easy. It’s not a quick process. Neither is overcoming obesity to be fit and well. And we need you well. Your family, friends, community and world…need you well and whole and living an inspired life.
The payoff of successful free agency is eternal and unprecedented. Ask any successfully self-employed person for the price for which they’d give up their free agency. Not a chance. This Thursday I will go deeper into these myths and realities of self-employment when Tom Ziglar interviews me on the Ziglar Success 2.0 Webcast, July 8th at 7pm Central.
People are achieving self-employment success…free agency…at a record pace right now. You owe it to yourself to know the real truth about it. Tune in.
